Two-step sign-in with an authenticator app
Add a 6-digit code from your phone to every sign-in, and save recovery codes.
Two-step sign-in adds a second proof to your password: a 6-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone. Even if someone learns your password, they cannot sign in without your phone.
Two-step sign-in is optional for now. IdeaLine will make it required for everyone, and we will tell you the date well in advance by email and inside the app.
Turn it on#
- Install an authenticator app
Examples are Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, 1Password and Authy.
- Open Settings, then Profile, then Two-step sign-in
Choose Turn on.
- Scan the QR code
Use your authenticator app to scan the code on the screen. If you cannot scan it, choose Can’t scan? Enter the key by hand and type the key into your app.
- Type the 6-digit code your app shows
IdeaLine checks that the app is set up correctly.
- Save your recovery codes
IdeaLine shows ten one-time recovery codes. Copy them, or choose Download, and keep them in a safe place such as a password manager. They are shown only once.
- Tick I saved these codes and choose Continue
You are signed in.
Treat recovery codes like a spare key. Do not leave them in an email or a shared document.
Signing in afterward#
Sign in with your email and password as usual. IdeaLine then asks for the 6-digit code. Codes change every 30 seconds, so type the newest one.
Add a second device or make new recovery codes#
- Sign in using your authenticator
Adding or removing devices needs your authenticator, not a recovery code.
- Open Settings, then Profile, then Two-step sign-in
- Choose Add another device or Make new recovery codes
New recovery codes replace the old ones.
My code says it did not work.
Codes change every 30 seconds. Type the newest one. Also check that your phone’s clock is set automatically, because a clock that is off by a minute or more makes codes fail.
Can I use more than one phone?
Yes. Add another device from Settings, Profile, Two-step sign-in. Either one can sign you in.
