Assign a project and its subtasks to people
Name one lead for the project and a person (and due date) for every subtask.
A project has one Assignee (project lead). That person is responsible for the project overall. Each subtask can also have its own person and due date, so everyone knows who owns which step.
Assign the project lead#
- Open the project
Select its card on the Board, Calendar or list.
- Pick a person in Assignee (project lead)
Only people in your workspace appear. Choose Unassigned to clear it.
- Choose Save
The person is told in their bell notifications that you assigned them the project.
Assign a subtask#
- Open the project and scroll to Subtasks
- Pick a person in the Assign to box on the subtask row
Leave it on Unassigned if nobody owns the step yet.
- Optional: choose a due date on the same row
- Choose Save
Each newly assigned person is told they were assigned that subtask. You are never notified about your own assignments.
Mark a subtask complete#
Tick the box at the start of the row, then choose Save. The activity feed records who completed it and when, and the project lead and creator are told. Untick and save to reopen it. Each step is written to the activity feed, so there is a record of every change.
Standard and View-only roles cannot edit other people’s projects, so they cannot change assignees. See Roles and permissions reference. Subtask people and dates are internal. Clients on a shared link never see them.
